How To: Make Alternative Montessori Style Sandpaper Letters

We love our homemade letters

Have you noticed a strong inverse relationship between how much prep time you spend on a teaching related project and how interested your kids are? Not so with this project in our family. Using hot glue to make flash cards worked! It doesn't look fancy, but if it does the job, who cares? These are a great teaching tool for Montessori style learning and D'Nealian cursive, as well as general writing skills. I can see this technique being successful for children with sensory processing issues who don't like rough things as well.

Montessori letter k tracing

For the most part I really adore Montessori materials and concepts. One material my children rejected outright is the sensory sandpaper letters and numbers to trace with your finger as preparation for writing. The materials I got from Adena Montessori are great quality, but the girls abhor the feeling of sandpaper and took their strokes willy-nilly out of order regardless of instruction, so I let it go until their numbers were reversed and I was in an all-out war over cursive.
#teacheroftheyear right?
The beauty of the hot glue cards is that the glue guides their fingers into the strokes in the right order! Before I took the plunge I started with numbers 0-9 with gold stickers, and with success ventured into lower case and finally upper case cursive letter cards.

Note: In a world where people write by hand infrequently cursive seems like an indulgence that is "way too hard" according to my kids, except for one thing– You remember things better when you write notes by hand, and one of the best ways to write fast enough to take thorough notes is cursive. I credit a lot of my good grades to cursive. Plus if you have nice handwriting its an easy ego boost because people always notice.

My children vehemently disagree with my premise, preferring to print in all caps, hence the cursive battle!

Montessori Hot Glue Letter Cards

Supplies:
27 cardboard sheets sized 5.5" x 8.5" (mine are 8.5" x 11" cardboard sheets cut in half),
ruler,
pencil,
eraser,
marker,
a popsicle stick (optional),
red or pink glitter glue,
6 blue metallic dot or star stickers for vowels, (mine is leftover table confetti)
21 red metallic dot or star stickers for consonants,
hot glue gun, and
10 sticks of hot glue

1. On 19 cards draw solid marker lines 1.5" from the top and bottom, and a broken line 4.5" from the top, centered between the solid lines. My broken line is 1/2" on, 1/2" off. These cards are for the letters that sit on the line.

2. In marker on the lower righthand corner print these cards with the letters a, b, c, d, e, h, i, k, l, m, n, o, r, s, t, u, v, w, and x.

3. On the remaining 8 cards, draw a light pencil line 1.5" from the bottom, a solid marker line 3" up from that, and a broken line another 3" up from your solid line. These cards are for letters with tails that drop below the line.

4. In marker on the lower righthand corner print these cards with the letters f, g, j, p, q, y, y, and z. Yes, 2 y's, as one will serve as a consonant and the other as a vowel.

Montessori letters glitter glue

5. Apply a line of pink or red glitter glue to the bottom-most solid marker line on each card. In D'Nealian handwriting curricula the line the letters rest on is often red/pink. Highlighting it helps the child to hold the card right side up, line the cards up by matching the red line, the glitter is a rough counterpoint to the smooth glue, and shiny is always better.

Montessori letters draft letters

6. In pencil, lightly rough out each letter referencing D'Nealian resources, Learning Curve Pro font for cursive, School House A font for print. For the letters with tails, use the pencil line toward the bottom of the card to show how far the tail should drop. Use the popsicle stick as a point of reference for the width of the strokes, and to round off the ends. Draw your final lines in marker and erase all visible pencil marks.

Montessori letters add sticker

7. Apply blue stickers or confetti to the leading stroke of each vowel: a, e, i, o, u, and y. Why use stickers? To show where to start. Why metallic? Because, I am told by my product testers, that is one of the things that make these cards great. Why blue? Because in the Montessori method vowels are always shown in blue.
8. Apply red stickers to the leading stroke of each consonant, b, c, d, f, g, h, j, k, l, m, n, p, q, r, s, t, v, w, x, y, and z. Why red? Because in the Montessori method consonants are always shown in red.

Montessori Letters Cursive H

9. With a steady hand, squeeze an even amount of glue along the outline of each letter starting at the first upward stroke. You can see on the letter "h" here that if a stroke crosses itself priority is given to the first pass, in this case the stroke from bottom to top, and the later stroke is partial for the sake of simplicity.

10. Spend the rest of your children's school ages trying to get the little glue strings off. Good luck!
Now, does anyone want to buy my barely used sandpaper letters?

Henna Alphabet Letter "Z" Printable

Henna Alphabet Letter Z

Can you believe this is the last letter? I started this alphabet in the Fall of '13, so it's been a long time coming! Soon I want to get them rounded up so you can see them all at once, but until then, all of you Zs out there have something nice for a change.

Henna Alphabet Letter "W" Printable

Lydia Lark Henna Alphabet Letter W Natural
The last 9 months are conclusive proof that I cannot multitask!
I had every intention of finishing out the alphabet and I stalled out with only a few letters to go. Here's to rectifying that.
In the intervening time I have been creating curriculum for my church's junior worship program and dancing. Guess what I discovered? I really miss this place!
Blogging is kind of a juggernaut: It's hard to get all the photos, writing, and editing started, but once I do, it takes on a life of its own. Maybe I'll be in the groove for a little bit, just to keep things fresh.
You will find the links for printing at the bottom of the post.

Henna Alphabet Letter "V" Printable

Lydia Lark Henna Alphabet Letter V bright

In like a lion, and out like I lamb, they say about March, but where is the lamb? We have enjoyed a few nice though blustery days and the line dried sheets they have afforded, but the meteorologists are predicting snow again next week! Until then the girls and I are counting every sign of spring we can find, and drawing and sewing when we are forced back in by the weather. Speaking of drawings, I just tied up the letter V, and not a moment too soon. I am also working on a second cashmere doll, some ink experiments in conjunction with a collage commission, and trying to give myself permission to sew myself something new.

Henna Alphabet Letter "U" Printable

Lydia Lark Henna Alphabet Letter U Bright

The letter U is one I can't see getting used too much, but you can't skip letters. I suppose that if you need it, nothing else will do! This week I have been working on a second doll, finishing up a piece I have worked on for years now, and drafting a new top for myself. It's been years and years since I have made myself anything, so that is quite a thrill! Somehow I squeezed this in too. I'd like to thank the academy, play dough, and my husband for his unflagging support!

Henna Alphabet Letter "T" Printable

With only a handful of letters left to go, I am amazed that there are still new patterns to make. That's the beauty of having a huge body of traditional work to draw from– get it? Every week I think I will be stumped and I will have to repeat myself, but there is such a vibrant history and no end of things you can do with paisley!

Maybe S should have been for swan instead of peacock? As a child one of my art teachers always laughed at my chubby animals, and these birds continue the tradition. I've never seen fatter fowl!

Henna Alphabet Letter "Q" Printable

Lydia Lark Henna Alphabet Letter Q bright

Thanks for the love on the letter P! Q was significantly easier to edit, though I suspect it will be less of a fan favorite. That's okay, I am really feeling an internal push to finish up.

Number 1, the process leading up to opening our home for fostering has dragged on... and on... but we have got to be close now, which means I will soon be a mother of three.

Number 2, I have a strong sense that after 6 years of blogging God is asking me to stop, but I need to get the alphabet done first.
I have taken breaks before, and this isn't a break as far as I know, it's an actual halt. That's something I will talk more about later but it's on my mind and I wanted to share it with you. I'm going to do my best to finish well though, with high quality content to the end. I still have plenty of ideas, after all! Some of you readers have become good friends starting with this odd form of communication, and I am so thankful for the opportunity to know you. Thank you.

Henna Alphabet Letter "P" Printable

Lydia Lark Alphabet Letter P Bright

So how are you holding up in this crazy weather? Here in our household we are very ready for some sun and warmth! Personally I am loving salt and sugar scrubs with coconut oil to help with winter crocodile skin. In the 6+ years since moving away from sustained winter, our cold weather clothing bit the dust and we hadn't bothered to replace it. Last winter, which was relatively mild anyway, we just kind of hunkered down in our dark apartment being cold and miserable. This year we acquired many of the things we need to adequately walk through the cold to the car, like enough long sleeved shirts, long underwear, tights, hats, mittens, and boots. Next year hopefully we will get the things we need to actually play in the cold like snow bibs. Moving from a place where the summer clothes never get put away and you just grit your way through a few cold weeks, it is a hard mental adjustment to actually invest in a second wardrobe for the year!
Last Sunday after church we went to Longwood Gardens to let the girls run their hearts out in one of the tropical greenhouse rooms. Other snowed-in child coping mechanisms include lots of baths, lots of art time, and lots of reading. Those are all full attention jobs for me, so I haven't had so much time for creating, but I did manage to gather up all my scrap moments and make this letter P. I love it so much. Maybe I need to have another girl just to give her a P initial. Just kidding!

Henna Alphabet Letter "N" Printable

Lydia Lark Henna Alphabet Letter N Bright
This week month has been full of difficulties both technical and otherwise. There is a part of me that loves times like this because I am a transformation nerd. Nothing changes you faster or makes you learn more than a hard time. Then there is the part of me which is just tired. That's why I am posting on a Saturday.
I have written a lot lately that isn't in the craft category but I don't want to hit publish until I am sure it is clearly written. Until then I am trying to double up on alphabet letters because I have been doing these for almost 27 weeks, but I am only halfway through. Bad girl!

Flash Card Collage

DIY Alphabet Flashcards

The girls are in a Super WHY obsessed alphabet loving phase as my almost-four year old is on the cusp of reading. In full recognition that flash cards don't fit every kid's learning style, the girls love them and they have the uppercase letters down pat. This brings me to a burning question I have been having: Why in the bewildering world do we have uppercase, lowercase, and cursive alphabets? Okay, okay, but why do they have to look so different?

DIY Alphabet Flashcards

Now we need lowercase flash cards and I got bitten by the "I can do a better job than that!" bug so we are making them a little at a time. One day I did the lettering, and we have been collaging corresponding pictures in batches. Thacia is helping me to look through glossy mags to find pictures. It reenforces the letter sounds as we page through asking "What starts with R? Hey! Ribbon! That's an R word."

DIY Alphabet Flashcards

It's not all fun and games though, as I deal with my own Tiny Art Director. The standards for what a king should look like were as rigorous as they were incommunicable. Don't even get me started on princess tiaras!

Wouldn't it be fun to do this with superhero/ comic book stuff? Really any interest you could get visuals on would look cool and could be catered to the little person using them. When they are done I will get them laminated.

Henna Alphabet Letter "K" Printable

What with this snowy weather on the eastern seaboard we have been awfully busy today. Busy sledding, finishing up reading Dance with Dragons, eating trail mix, and playing Settlers of Catan Cities and Knights. You know. Busy. Whew. I am thankful for this snow day that is everything restful that our Christmas break was not, with a little productivity thrown in too.
Happy weekend my friends!

Henna Alphabet Letter "I" Printable

Lydia Lark Henna Alphabet Letter I Bright
If there is a job any twelve year old boy would kill for it's the job my husband just "hired" me to do. I use quotes because my pay is willingly garnished. You may or may not know that my love is a life-long Lego Maniac. He started buying big lots of Legos to acquire sets he was missing, selling off whatever he didn't care for to defray the cost. Then he started actually making money. It's slow and labor intensive, but it's an opportunity to polish off our debt so I have started helping him out with the easy parts like building sets, finding missing parts, photographing and shipping Lego sets. I am pleasantly surprised by how much I am enjoying it, how well it fits into my day, and how much quicker we are turning over stock. The biggest shock has been that it is letting lots of pressure off my creative work. Don't ask me why!
